This year we obtained a grant from the Mathematics Association of America called the Dolciani Mathematics Enrichment Grant. This allowed the Mathematics and Statistics Department to designate a School Outreach Graduate Teaching Assistantship.
Part of this grant enabled Chip Goucher to initiate the after-school math club at MLMS.
The reviewers thought the project, “Showed great promise to excite mathematically talented students and to engage them in the further study of mathematics.”
Side note: Mary P. Dolciani, the grant’s namesake, was known for developing a method used for teaching basic algebra in the United States (called “Dolciani algebra”, emphasizing the basis of drill like arithmetic, rather than proofs as in Euclidean geometry).
